For beekeepers, the rewards of maintaining a healthy hive go far beyond jars of golden honey. One of the most versatile and valuable byproducts of beekeeping is beeswax. Harvested from the honeycomb, beeswax can be transformed into a range of useful and marketable products, with candles being among the most popular. Beeswax candles are known not only for their warm glow and subtle honey scent but also for their clean-burning, eco-friendly nature.Making beeswax candles is a satisfying and creative extension of the beekeeping journey. Whether you're interested in creating gifts for friends and family or generating an additional source of income, learning how to make beeswax candles from honeycomb is a practical and fulfilling endeavor. This article will guide you through the entire process—from harvesting and purifying wax to crafting beautiful, natural candles and offering them to market. We'll also explore the benefits of beeswax candles and provide detailed guidance on how to sell them successfully. Benefits of Beeswax Candles Beeswax candles stand apart from other types of candles for several compelling reasons. They are often regarded as the gold standard among natural candles, both for their aesthetic qualities and their environmental benefits. Here are some of the key advantages of beeswax candles: 1. Clean Burning Beeswax candles burn with little to no smoke when properly trimmed, unlike paraffin candles, which can emit harmful chemicals. The natural composition of beeswax allows for a cleaner, purer flame that doesn't contribute to indoor air pollution. 2. Long Burn Time Beeswax has a higher melting point than most other waxes, which means beeswax candles burn slower and last longer. This makes them more economical over time and desirable for people looking for quality over quantity. 3. Hypoallergenic and Non-Toxic People with allergies or asthma often find beeswax candles to be a better option because they do not contain synthetic fragrances or additives. Some claim that burning beeswax can actually purify the air by producing negative ions that bind with toxins, though scientific evidence on this is limited. 4. Natural Honey Scent Beeswax candles naturally emit a light, sweet fragrance reminiscent of honey and flowers. This scent is derived from the nectar and pollen collected by bees, and it does not require any artificial additives to enhance it. 5. Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Beeswax is a renewable resource produced by bees as part of their natural lifecycle. Responsible harvesting ensures that the bees are not harmed and that the wax can be sustainably collected year after year. 6. Beautiful Aesthetic With their golden hue and radiant flame, beeswax candles add a touch of elegance and warmth to any space. They are ideal for decorative purposes and events like weddings, holidays, and special ceremonies. How to Harvest Honeycomb Before you can begin making candles, you'll need to harvest and clean the honeycomb. Harvesting honeycomb is a delicate process that requires care to protect both the bees and the hive. For more details on how to harvest honeycomb, check out our article: How to Get Beeswax from Honeycomb 1. Choosing the Right Time The best time to harvest honeycomb is late summer to early fall, when the bees have had ample time to fill their combs with honey. Ensure your bees have enough stores to get through winter before removing any comb. 2. Removing the Frames Open the hive and locate the frames filled with capped honeycomb. Use a hive tool to gently lift the frames. Brush away any bees using a soft bee brush to avoid harming them. 3. Cutting the Comb For wax harvesting, you may want to select older combs that have been replaced by the bees. Cut the comb out of the frame using a serrated knife. Avoid taking too much comb from the brood area, as this can disrupt the hive. 4. Separating Wax from Honey To separate the wax from the honey, place the comb into a mesh strainer over a large container and allow it to drain for a day or two. The honey can be bottled, and the remaining wax can then be rendered for candle-making. 5. Rendering the Wax Rendering is the process of melting and cleaning the wax. Place the drained comb into a double boiler and slowly heat it until the wax melts. Do not use direct heat, as beeswax is flammable. Once melted, strain the wax through cheesecloth or a fine mesh to remove impurities. Pour the clean wax into molds or containers to cool and solidify for future use. What You Need To Make Beeswax Candles Before you begin making beeswax candles, it's important to gather all the necessary materials and tools. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you will need: 1. Beeswax Purified beeswax from your hive, or supplement with purchased beeswax if needed. Make sure it is free of debris and moisture. 2. Candle Molds or Containers You can use silicone molds for pillar or shaped candles, or glass jars for container candles. Molds come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on your preference. 3. Wicks Wick size and material matter. Cotton or hemp wicks are ideal for beeswax. Choose the appropriate size based on the candle diameter. Too small a wick will tunnel, and too large may cause smoking. 4. Double Boiler A double boiler setup is essential for safely melting beeswax. You can make one by placing a metal bowl over a pot of simmering water. 5. Pouring Pitcher A heat-resistant pouring pitcher helps transfer the melted wax into molds without spilling. 6. Thermometer Beeswax melts around 145°F (63°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature and avoid overheating. 7. Stirring Utensil A wooden or silicone stirrer is useful for mixing the wax or incorporating essential oils (if using). 8. Optional Additions Essential oils, dried herbs, or dye chips can be added for scent, decoration, or color, though many purists prefer the natural look and scent of beeswax. How to Make Beeswax Candles from Honeycomb Once your wax is rendered and your tools are ready, it's time to create your candles. Follow these steps carefully: 1. Prepare Your Work Area Cover your workspace with newspaper or an old cloth to catch any spills. Beeswax can be difficult to remove once hardened, so this step will save cleanup time later. Ensure good ventilation if you plan to add essential oils, and gather all your materials within easy reach. 2. Measure and Cut the Wick Measure your wick so it is 1-2 inches taller than the height of your mold or container. This extra length helps with placement and later trimming. Tie one end of the wick to a wick bar, pencil, or skewer that will rest across the top of the mold or container. Secure the bottom of the wick with a dab of melted wax or a wick sticker to keep it centered during pouring. 3. Melt the Beeswax Using your double boiler, slowly melt the beeswax over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to help it melt evenly. Never leave it unattended, as beeswax is highly flammable. Monitor the temperature with a thermometer to ensure it stays between 145°F and 170°F. Avoid letting it boil or smoke. Once completely liquid, skim off any foam or remaining impurities that may rise to the top. 4. Add Optional Ingredients Allow the melted wax to cool slightly to around 130°F before adding essential oils, which can evaporate at higher temperatures. Stir gently but thoroughly to distribute the oils evenly throughout the wax. If using dye chips or herbs, add them at this stage, ensuring they are fully incorporated. Avoid adding water-based ingredients, which can cause the wax to sputter or spoil. 5. Pour the Wax Slowly pour the wax into your molds or containers, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. Pouring too quickly can cause air bubbles or splash. Hold the pouring pitcher close to the mold to maintain control and reduce splatter. Tap the mold lightly on the surface to release any trapped air bubbles. 6. Secure the Wick Check that the wick is still centered and upright. Adjust as needed while the wax is still soft. Use the wick bar or pencil across the top of the mold to keep it steady. A centered wick ensures an even burn and prevents tunneling or uneven melting during use. 7. Cool and Cure Let the candles cool at room temperature, undisturbed. Sudden changes in temperature or moving the molds can cause cracking or uneven surfaces. Larger candles may take up to 24 hours to fully cool. After cooling, allow the candles to cure for 1-2 days to improve their hardness and burn quality. 8. Trim the Wick Once your candle is fully set and cured, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm) above the wax. This wick length helps create a steady, clean-burning flame and minimizes smoke or soot. A properly trimmed wick also extends the life of the candle. 9. Remove from Mold (If Applicable) If using silicone or flexible molds, gently bend or peel the mold away from the candle to release it. Avoid forcing it out, as beeswax can be delicate. If the candle resists, let it sit a bit longer to cool further before trying again. Once unmolded, inspect your candle for any rough edges, and smooth them with your fingers or a warm tool if necessary. How to Sell Beeswax Candles Turning your beeswax candles into a source of income involves more than just making them—you need to market, package, and sell them effectively. Here’s how: 1. Develop a Brand Create a memorable name and visual identity for your candles. Highlight qualities such as "hand-poured," "100% beeswax," "chemical-free," or "locally made." 2.
